In early 2007 several local Waterbury residents organized the 1st annual Waterbury Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Rally as part of the nationwide Step-It-Up Day on April 14.  The event was a standing-room-only success.  The attendees overflowed the Waterbury Senior Center, and then formed a noisy, colorful parade that streamed down Waterbury’s Main Street.

On that day, almost 50 people signed up on a clipboard indicating that they were interested in continuing local efforts to reduce carbon emissions and promote energy efficiency and the use of renewable resources in Waterbury and the surrounding area.  Waterbury LEAP was born!

From the very beginning LEAP has been an independent organization fueled by the energy and ideas of local volunteer members.  We support our town leaders whenever we can, but we are not a town organization. 

In 2009 LEAP members decided to set an ambitious goal for ourselves:  to help Waterbury become a model ‘green’ community within the next decade (by September, 2009).  In order to help us achieve this goal, in late 2009 we turned LEAP into a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, and we hired a part-time Waterbury Energy Coordinator. 

LEAP members have accomplished a great deal in a short period of time, but we hope we are just scratching the surface in the crucial areas of emissions reductions, and promoting renewable energy and energy efficiency.  Please go to Projects to read about all the initiatives we have undertaken.
